Harlequin's Summer Party 2016

Annually we hold both summer and Christmas parties. This enables our staff to really relax, have fun together, and build team spirit for the rest of the year to come. For our summer party we do a daytime activity, and either a big lunch, or dinner afterwards. The activities are always kept a surprise, and this year was no different. We were told that we would be making the commute down to Petersfield to Jamie’s home. The summer party has been held at Jamie’s a few times over the years, so some of us had an idea of what the day would hold, however those who had not experienced it were in for a treat.

Upon arrival Emma (Jamie’s wife) had organised tea, coffee and some delicious pastries to give us some much needed energy for what was to come. Once this was finished we headed over to the field for our first activity. Jamie and his son had set up the sit-on lawnmower with a water-ski rope attached to the back. Behind the lawnmower we were to be riding what I can only describe as a skateboard, wakeboard hybrid for rough terrain. Naturally, as a primarily female office there were some who were slightly hesitant about the task ahead, but once we had all had a test run (some more successful than others) all were a little more relaxed.

We were split into two groups and there were three courses which we had to complete as a team. Round one was a simple once round the track which was timed to see who did it fastest. Round two saw a selected member of each team complete a slalom, and round three was sheer strength as it was a free for all round where the selected team member had to hold on for as long as possible for 5 minutes, and each time their feet touched the ground points were deducted. I am sure as you can image it was carnage, however a great time was had by all, even if there were a few sore bums the next day.

Task one completed, we retired into the house for a delicious lunch to recharge for round two of games. We had Emma’s World famous cucumber mousse which is a staff favourite (One day when I get the recipe I will post it here as it is sublime!) paired with a deliciously crisp Provençale Rosé. Followed by BBQ lamb with a selection of salads, paired with a light and fruity Burgundy.

Suitably full, and with our food settled, we proceeded to go outside for round two of games. Naturally since we had been drinking at lunch we were all feeling decidedly silly, and these games were taken a little less seriously than before. Still in our teams we had to use the wheelbarrow to transport all members of the team individually from one end of the lawn to the other. Then we had a sack race, egg & spoon, hockey dribbling and apple bobbing. The techniques used were decidedly dodgy, and I am sure that everyone would agree that there were various elements of cheating occurring.

After the last game was over, all damp and having laughed a lot, we packed up to get taxis’s back to the station for our ride home. Thank you Jamie, Alan and Emma for organising such a wonderful day for us all!
